If you, or anyone, can point me toward a publicly accessible resource that provides domestic anime DVD sales statistics, I'd be very grateful.
According to ANN's boss, who DOES have access to Videoscan, a sales figure of 30000 copies for Haruhi volume 1 would be an extremely generous estimate ( http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/...=asc&start=540 ). Didn't Bandai mention producing 20000 copies of the Haruhi volume 1 limited edition alone ? This would suggest that they were expecting to sell at least as many again of the regular edition for a total of maybe 40000 to 50000 copies, which would mean that sales for Haruhi were disappointing.

Edit: hopefully link will work now
