Tsurikichi Sanpei Movie Announced

The Sankei Sports Newspaper reports that Toei will begin filming a live action movie adaptation of Takao Yaguchi’s classic fishing manga Tsurikichi Sanpei on the 25th. The film will be released next spring. 13-year-old Kenta Suga will play protagonist Mihira Sanpei, a young boy with a gift for fishing. Toei reportedly hopes to turn the film into a successful multiple film franchise similar to Shochiku’s Tsuribaka Nisshi series that now has 19 live action films.

The Tsurikichi Sanpei manga was originally serialized in Shonen Magazine from 1973 to 1983, and a 109 episode anime series was produced by Nippon Animation from 1980 to 1982.
