ADV Films to Rerelease Battle Angel
|ADV Films has secured rights to produce a limited re-release of the Battle Angel OVA series DVD. AD Vision originally released the 2 episode Battle Angel (Gunnm) anime series, an adaptation of the cyberpunk manga by Yukito Kishiro, on American DVD on December 7, 1999. The OVA series has been out of circulation in America for over 7 years. ADV Films will produce a limited production run of fewer than 10,000 new Battle Angel DVDs. The disc will retail at $19.98 and should be available from retailers soon.
UPDATE: ADV Films has now informed us that they are not replicating a new batch of Battle Angel DVDs. A small quantity of original pressing Battle Angel DVDs will be solicited to select retailers including AnimeNation.

It’s about time. I managed to snag a new, unopened copy about a year ago for about $30, since I hadn’t seen it in about a decade. This is hands down my favorite anime/manga series.
My question is, why only a limited print run? With James Cameron’s Battle Angel movie right around the corner (sometime next year, they say), the demand for this OVA is going to skyrocket, and ADV’s limited print run will (hopefully) have run out long before then, and then they’ll be completely unprepared.
Yet another questionable business practice by ADV.
But, I’m still glad to hear this tiny OVA series hasn’t been forgotten, and that I can hand some of these out as Giftmas presents.
Some titles are out of sight for so long, I simply forget to ponder if their license ever dried up… I have Battle Angel on VHS… so, yeah, maybe a new run would be a decent idea.
On the other hand, it’s just another re-release from an anime distributor lying on the floor right now. What may be good for morale might not exactly be good for business.
