Japanese Otaku Seeks to Marry Mikuru
|Within the past week, Japanese otaku Taichi Takashita has come to international recognition because of his genuine desire to marry Mikuru Asahina, the time-traveling school girl character from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Takashita’s online petition to encourage the enactment of a Japanese law allowing citizens to legally marry fictional characters has already earned over 2,200 signatures since October 22nd. Takashita hopes to collect one million signatures before presenting his case to the Japanese government.
“I am no longer interested in three dimensions. I would even like to become a resident of the two-dimensional world,” Takashita states. “However, that seems impossible with present-day technology. Therefore, at the very least, would it be possible to legally authorise marriage with a two-dimensional character?”

2,200?
More crazy people like him.
First time i read this news in Sankaku Complex, he just collected 530 signatures with the online petition.
Those are probably just people entertaining the spectacle. I wonder if he’d have to get permission from Mikuru’s copyright holders too…
Has anyone ever asked Mikuru how she feels about this? Did she even accept his proposal? Could make the rest of it be kinda moot.
They should pass it into law… stipulating that the character be 18+, having not appeared in any new media for 8 years; and only with a limited-resource character-licensing, capped public-auction from the copyright holder that allows multiple winners.
All proceeds of the auction winners are evenly are evenly distributed among the production staff (i.e. animators, in-betweeners)… in Euros.
