Akira Screenwriters Revealed
|In June, Bloody Disgusting reported that Warner Bros.’ Akira live action film project was “dead as a doornail.” The following month film producer Andrew Lazar told iFMagazine that the project was not dead, and that Warner had writers actively working on a script. Now, Collider reveals that the screenwriters at work on the Akira script are Children of Men screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. The Collider report supports Lazar’s earlier claim that the movie, “is a real priority project for Warner Bros.” Collider continues to state that the film begin filming as early as next year for a 2011 release as a major event movie.

Like Speed Racer, they’ve been saying they’re going to make an LA Akira for 15 years at least. Even if they can get a working script, the budget would be so high that the movie couldn’t be profitable, and they’d have to cop out on the shit which matters to the story. (*cough* Watchmen squid *cough*) Too many execs nowadays want to play with CG toys to sucker the masses into buying tixx, but unless the concept has broad appeal, it’s going to flop or barely break even. At least a Monster movie can be shot on a reasonable budget, but Akira could end up being the studio’s next Superman Returns. I think they need to establish a wider audience for the material first, like what Sony and Imagi are trying to do with Blood and Astro Boy.
