Fans Unite to Petition Mixx Entertainment

The fan organization The Friends of CLAMP Coalition (FACC) have begun a letter writing campaign and boycott of Mixx/Tokyopop Entertainment to try to block Mixx’s translation and publication, or at least improve Mixx’s treatment, of the recent CLAMP Studio manga series Clover. And a FACC web-site will be up and running soon. Mixx Entertainment’s domestic releases of the Sailormoon and Rayearth manga have proven very popular, but controversy has also always plagued Mixx, stemming from fan complaints of poor translations, editing, and poor dubbing and non-release of the anime OAV Kenji no Haru. Jennifer Fairchild, founder and chairman of FACC, has made a public appeal for awareness and action:

“As diehard fans of CLAMP’s beautiful artwork and wonderful stories, we are appalled with how MIXX has been handling their work here in the United States. Card Captor Sakura is an atrocity that should never have seen print in the state it is in now. The covers are horrendous, the translation almost unreadable, the lettering is simplistic and demeaning and the printing is muddy, blurry and dark to the point of embarrassment. How could this have gone to press? How could CLAMP approve of this? How could Kodansha approve of this? As fans, we are outraged!”

“We of FACC have recently learned that MIXX has also licensed CLOVER, an even more intricate and beautiful body of CLAMP work. CLOVER will require more attention to detail in translation and retouch than any of their manga. After their cheap, shoddy publishing attempts on all their past manga, MIXX has proven they are not willing to devote the time, funding and resources necessary to any project, especially one as deserving of it as CLOVER. MIXX cannot be allowed to publish CLOVER. It would be a travesty..”

“What we are calling for all CLAMP and manga fans to do is to write the Japanese publisher, Kodansha, and request MIXX not be granted the right to publish CLOVER, or any other manga for that matter. Tell them how you feel about MIXX’s treatment of the titles. As fans, our opinions should matter to them, even here in America. Tell them you will boycott any and all MIXX manga. Let’s make a point and take a stand. Hopefully our cause will also be brought to the attention of the women of CLAMP themselves. We won’t stand for poorly translated and printed English manga anymore. E-mail your letters, complaints and comments to Kodansha’s International Division to the attention of y-ando@kodansha.co.jpand m-makino@kodansha.co.jp.”

“Please do not mistake this as an attack on CLAMP manga. WE LOVE CLAMP! We want to see as much of their work translated here as possible. But we want to see it done by someone who cares about CLAMP and their work as much as we do. We want to see it done right. Until that day, I urge all CLAMP fans to buy the original Japanese manga and download the translations from the internet. NO MORE MIXX! I also hope Sailor Moon and Gundam fans will take note do the same!”
