Global Sailor Moon Revival Possible?
|News surfaced last summer that the complete 200 episode Sailor Moon television series would be getting a revival via early 2010 TV broadcast in Italy. License! Global Magazine now quotes Toei Animation Europe director general Kanji Kazahaya who says, “We are certain that strategically Italy is the ideal country to initiate a global re-launch of the classic Japanese animated series such as ‘Sailormoon’.” However, Toei has not announced any plans to relaunch the Sailor Moon franchise in any other global markets. Meanwhile, Toei has licensed new broadcast contracts for Dragon Ball in Chilé and Digimon Frontier in Brazil, and a new DVD release of Digimon Adventure in Brazil. So Toei’s plans for global series relaunches may not necessarily include Sailor Moon.
The 1992 Sailor Moon TV series will begin airing on Italian television this fall.

I think we may be over-contextualizing the quote… TOEI Animation Europe has bolstered their management there quite a bit as of late. They’ve put much greater interest in Central/Eastern Europe penetration than North America, and for good reason.
