Opening A Day
To refresh your memory or introduce you to an interesting opening animation sequence, I offer the absolutely beautiful opening of the 1998 Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight TV series. The theme song is “Kiseki no Umi” performed by Maaya Sakamoto.

Always loved Sakamoto’s voice; very nice selection. It’s been years since I’ve watched or read any LODOSS universe anime or manga, but that’s a lovely opening.

That’s probably the BEST animation in the ENTIRE Lodoss War anime saga!
I’ve seen all of Lodoss War and half of Chaos Ring (the spin-off) but the animation in general was wretched. The writing and appealing characters are the series’ saving points.
Don’t get wrong — I like Lodoss and have the CPM remastered OVA releases and the Heroic Knight TV series. Personally, I prefer the OVA and Parn-centric episodes of Heroic Knight. I just couldn’t get as emotionally invested in Spark and his crew to the extent that I cared for the original characters.
Lodoss is kind of a weird anime series at any rate. The OVA was finished before the manga and novel series were and so the ending was changed for the original Parn/Deedlit story arcs (in the OVA series) and certain events unfolded differently in the OVA.
The TV series was produced after the main novels and a manga were produced. The TV series actually goes back and shows certain events from the manga/novel perspective which contradicts the OVA to an extent.
Lodosss is one of the few anime properties I wish could go back into production and be produced with higher production values than the original OVA version. I just don’t see that happening now because it seems the time has passed for that and quite a few older anime releases like Devil Hunter Yohko, too. Lodoss has had it heyday and hasn’t become one of those continually renewed anime like Gundam or Macross.
The best that can be hoped for now is that the series gets re-released occasionally on home video and that the master tapes get taken care and get the remastering and restoration they need from time to time…
This makes me want to dig through my collection and rewatch the OVA series. Parn and Deedlit are amongst my favorite anime couples. It is too bad that this OP is so vastly superior to the actual series; it’s no wonder this opening was used as a trailer for selling the series (which I bought in its entirety for ~$15 back in the day).

Always hilarious to see that opening. It starts with a lingering shot of PAAARN…..!!!! With over 24+ seconds on just him at the beginning~ Followed by short shifting poor Deedlit to a mere 14 second follow up.
Then you get 1 to 2 seconds of the Main cast (the main male character gets a staggering 5 secs!) that you’ll be seeing through All of the tv series….
Absolutely laughing out Loud funny to me when I first saw this opening!
