NIS America Goes to Working!!
|NIS America has announced its acquisition of domestic distribution rights to this spring’s comedy television series Working!! The adaptation of Karino Takatsu’s 4-panel manga details the everyday goings-on at a Hokkaido family restaurant named Wagnaria. NIS America will release the complete 13-episode series, under the title “Wagnaria!!”, in a single subtitled-only DVD collection with a hardcover art book and collector’s packaging next March.
Great news. This show was an under-rated little gem.

…which means we’ll have to pay fifty or sixty bucks for thirteen episodes.
I loved this brilliant show. Certainly worth $50 or $60 bucks to support everyone involved in making it and getting it to the States.
Under-rated? By whom? Just curious.
I liked NIS’ Toradora release– big fat hard box, hardcover episode guide/book full of interesting material & interviews… really fantastic product, though at a premium price. I think it’s the right way to sell (this type of) anime in the US though, and I’m glad to see NIS’ experiment in anime distribution is still going.
I feel like there isn’t much intrinsic value to slapping subbed episodes on a disc and throwing it in a cheap thinpack box destined for the bargain bin. Such a product is only slightly more appealing than me burning a fansub to a DVD-R. NIS understands this with their niche, limited, relatively high end releases, and for a lot of niche anime series (e.g. Wagaya no Oinari-sama), this may be the only way to go.
I don’t get the name change to “Wagnaria!!” though.
Maybe they’re worried about being sued if people confuse it w/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118517/ , even though there’s no DVD of that show?
