PS2 DVD Tech Specs Analysis

Animeigo producer Shin Kurokawa posted a few of his thoughts on the recently released U.S. Playstation 2 console’s DVD playback function to the company’s DVD mailing list.

“Right after we got our PS2 for testing DVDs, the first thing I b*tched about was the video output quality. Personally, I think it’s atrocious. To be fair though, I could only test its composite out section, since S-Video or component adaptors didn’t come with it.”

“Second, which is much more technical in nature, is how it works with system registers. These things are called SPRMs and GPRMs, which are crucial for certain kinds of coding, and for some bizarre reason, how PS2 (and many low-end machines made by other co’s) works with them can at best be described as…um.. funky. The weird thing is, based on some tests I’ve done, the Japanese PS2 behaves differently (read: better). What this basically means is that, it just makes DVD programming a living h*ll (…it’s a nightmare now!).”
