Momo e no Tegami Teaser Online
The homepage for creator & director Hiroyuki Okiura’s upcoming anime film Momo e no Tegami (A Letter to Momo) has added a streaming teaser. Since directing the 2000 film Jin-roh, Okiura spent seven years planning, writing, storyboarding, and now directing Momo e no Tegami, a story about a young girl who moves to rural Japan following the death of her father, where she begins to see strange things while wondering what her father wanted to tell her in his last, unfinished letter to her. The movie is being animated by a talented team of experienced animators at Production I.G. The movie will have its world premiere screening at the Toronto International Film Festival before opening theatrically in Japan during next spring’s Golden Week holiday.
With a bit of luck, this should be excellent. American productions usually suffer with “too many cooks in the kitchen,” but anime productions with all-star crew usually turn out exceptional.

I’m still worried about Okiura’s aesthetics slipping into the uncanny valley (observe the unappealing character designs), especially for this kind of bright idyllic children’s movie, but hopefully the movie itself will be good.
Animation in the states is so profoundly collaborative, it can often be said that we’re collaborative to a fault. It’s not uncommon for an anime film to be written, storyboarded, and directed all by the same person. Satoshi Kon did this rather frequently… it shows crazy fortitude, but is also prone to significant project delays (which we aren’t as tolerant of in the states).
