Fine-Grain Godzilla Print Surfaces

A mere day after Criterion quietly revealed its plans to release Ishiro Honda’s seminal 1954 monster movie Gojira on domestic DVD & BD, and following a public request from Criterion for public assistance in locating 35mm materials for director Terry O. Morse’s 1956 English language revision Godzilla: The King of Monsters, an anonymous private collector has come forward with a vintage 35mm fine-grain print of the English language film. “Fine grain duplicates” were, “High quality positive prints made from the original negative for the express purpose of making further internegatives – it’s not quite as good as having the original camera negative, but it’s as close as anyone can get 50 years later.”

Classic Media & Sony Pictures released the 1954 Gojira film on subtitled American DVD for the first time ever in 2006 in a handsome double-disc special edition.
