Tom Cruise to Star in Yukikaze Movie
|Deadline reports that Tom Cruise has just signed to star in an American feature based on Japanese sci-fi author Chohei Kambayashi’s 1984 novel Sentou Yousei Yukikaze (Battle Fairy Yukikaze). The film will be shot by 3 Arts Entertainment, the studio also producing the Tom Cruise-starring adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka sci-fi war novel All You Need is Kill. Warner Bros will produce & distribute the Yukikaze movie. Anime production studio Gonzo adapted the Yukikaze novel into a five-episode 2002-2005 OVA series. Yukikaze is the story of pilots who fly sentient fighter jets in a war against a mysterious alien invasion force.
Tom’s kind of coming full circle from 1986’s Top Gun.

I hope they keep that Brokeback Airforce stuff at the end
In a lookup I did about this story for Facebook, I found that the TV series isn’t the complete story; Chohei Kambayashi has a third book in the series that hasn’t been adapted or translated to English.
I sincerely hope Tommy Boy is cast as the mentor of the hero rather than as the hero himself, because I’m sure audiences would hate it if they did the latter and were faithful to the source.
I don’t care if he plays the kind hearted janitor, this is good news. It will become bad news when the movie fails horribly, but we gotta start somewhere.
