Marine Boy Now on American DVD
|As of today, Warner Bros. offers the 26-episode first season of the 1966 Marine Boy anime series, one of the first ever American co-productions, as a 3-disc made-on-demand DVD set retailing at $29.95. Toei & Telebi Douga initially produced three black & white episodes of Dolphin Prince (Dolphin Ouji), broadcasting the episodes in April 1965. The episodes were then redesigned & re-animated in color and broadcast in October 1966 as the first three episodes of the 13-episode “Ganbare! Marine Kid” television series. American programming distributor Seven Arts Television then contracted with Telebi Douga to expand the series for American release. An additional 65 episodes were animated with a contractual stipulation that the new series would air on American television before airing in Japan. 75 episodes of the extended 78-episode series aired on American television beginning in 1967 under the title “Marine Boy.” The series’ first 36 episodes were broadcast in Japan in 1969 as “Undersea Boy Marine” (Kaitei Shonen Marine). The complete 78-episode Kaitei Shonen Marine series was later broadcast on Japanese television in 1971.
