Ghibli to Take Action Against Online Anime Distribution
|Studio Ghibli executives and the Japanese Video Software Association have apparently recently become aware that at least one “camcorder” version of Spirited Away has made it onto the internet and is now being widely distributed through file-sharing program WinMX. Digital fansubs and anime episode file sharing has been going on in America for the past 2 years, however it is now coming to the attention of Japanese copyright owners and especially the aggressively anti-bootleg Studio Ghibli, which is arguing for legal prosecution of those illegally sharing anime online. In the past most Japanese companies have overlooked copyright infringing fansubs and episode trading; however widespread distribution of Spirited Away, which is still in Japanese theaters, seems to be generating a bit more serious concern among Japanese professionals.
