Sony Announces Portable Playstation

At its pre-E3 press conference yesterday, Sony officially announced development of the PSP (Portable PlayStation) unit that will launch at the end of 2004.

*The system will play mini-discs capable of storing 1.8GB of data.
*The system will support MPEG4 video, meaning it will be able to play full movies on mini DVD discs.
*The 16:9 widescreen, backlit screen will be 4.5″ (compared to the Gameboy Advance SP’s 2.9″ screen).
*The PSP will support a resolution of 480 x 272 pixels (compared to the GBA SP’s 240 x 160 pixels).
*The PSP will have a 32 bit core processor (compared to the GBA SP’s 32 bit RISC processor).
*The PSP will support full 3D graphics
*The PSP will include built in stereo speakers and a headphone jack (compared to the GBA SP’s mono speaker and no headphone jack).
*The PSP will include USB 2.0 support for upload to PCs or Sony memory sticks.
*The PSP will run on a rechargable battery or optional AC adapter.
*PSP games will be anti-piracy encoded, but not territory locked.
