Manga Reveal Japanese Cultural Discrimination

The New York Times recently published a lengthy article discussing current best-selling Japanese manga Kenranyyu (“Hating Things South Korean”) by Sharin Yamano, and “Introduction to China,” written and illustrated by Japanese artist George Akiyama from a script by Taiwanese scholar Ko Bunyu. Both manga are virulently critical of China and South Korea, in fact, arguably racist. Critical responses to the two manga suggest that their success in Japan is representative of a major social attitude in Japan- both racial discrimination and a sense of cultural insecurity.
