Anime Expo Summary

So, over 60 new to America manga acquisitions were announced at this year’s Anime Expo while only two new to America anime titles were announced (three if Ghost in the Shell 2.0 is included). By comarison, there were 28 new anime title acquisitions announced at the 2007 Anime Expo. Haven’t the contractions from ADV Manga, Drama Queen, and TOKYOPOP already demonstrated that the American market can’t support the number of manga titles being released domestically? And now we’re seeing domestic anime licenses merely change hands in place of seeing a significant influx of new titles. While these aren’t necessarily encouraging portents for the future of America’s anime industry, at least American anime fans do have an ability to make a significant impact on the growth and development of the industry.
