The personality of Arrietty and her parents, some degree of Haru’s personality, and the rapid cut editing of this first American trailer for Ghibli’s Karigurashi no Arrietty completely reinterpret & misrepresent the spirit and tone of the original Japanese picture.
I watched a preview this past weekend in theaters while seeing PUSS IN BOOTS. Sure, visually, it looks pretty wonderful, but it could be hard to digest otherwise. This video is different from the preview that I saw in theaters, which, truthfully, uses worse clips and worse editing for the film’s promotion. But then again, I have a few other beefs with how they’re promoting this film…

It looks fun to those who are not very knowledgeable about its origins and the original story. I’m not familiar with the original story myself so it looks like it might be fun to watch. Maybe I should pick up the original from Amazon.jp since it has English subtitles.
It reminds me of “The Littles” from way back in the 80s though honestly I don’t remember much about it except that it was about little people living in the walls of human houses.
Three cheers for celebrity voice acting…
