Ask John: Are There Any Anime About Graphic Artists?
|
Question:
You recently posted about anime based around golf. I’ve personally seen anime about libraries, and have heard about anime based around other seemingly obscure careers. So it made we wonder, are there any anime based around my career of Graphic Design/Graphic Art?
Answer:
Numerous anime productions have been created about manga artists, including Bakuman, Doujin Work, Comic Party, and Mangirl, and several anime have been created about animators, including Animation Runner Kuromi and Otaku no Video. And while biographical anime have been produced to tribute authors (Kenji Miyazawa), pop stars (Pink Lady), civil servants (Yoichi Hatta, Koizumi Junichiro, Kiko Akishino), and historical figures (Anne Frank, Hijikata Toshizo, Oyama Masutasu), to name a few, I can’t recollect any anime productions that revolve around particular graphic artists. However, the 2007 Hidamari Sketch and 2009 GA Geijutsuka Art Design Class anime television series revolve around art school students that study graphic art and contemporary art design. While the lengthy Hidamari Sketch franchise actually includes very little concentration on actual art theory, the GA television series does include a healthy amount of focus on practical graphic art design practice.

There is also Sketchbook Full ColorS
And Pet Girl of Sakurasou, about a school of graphic and traditional artists, at least 2 of which are professionals.
You missed an obvious one: Honey & Clover.
Regrettably, I haven’t watched enough of Sketchbook ~Full Colors~ to really determine how much “graphic art” focus it has, but, to me, the show seemed far more like a slice-of-life iyashikei show than a show about art design. Only watched the first episode of Sakurasou no Pet, so I can’t say anything about it. I have watched all of Honey & Clover, and while the characters are professionals in the art design industry, I certainly wouldn’t say that the show focuses on or highlights any amount of graphic art as a profession. It’s distinctly just an background detail used to contextualize the characters’ personalities.
