Ask John: Is There any Clover Anime?
|Question:
Was there ever any anime (music video, OVA) produced based on ClAMP’s Clover manga? If so, were can I find it?
Answer:
There have been 4 official CLAMP anime music videos. The X² OAV, known as “Double X,” was a 30 minute montage of CLAMP X illustrations set to the music of rock group X-Japan. The last 3 minutes of the program was an original X anime music video directed by Rintaro with character design by Nobuteru Yuuki. It was released in 1993, close to four years before the theatrical X movie. The next year Madhouse again adapted CLAMP’s works into an anime music video titled Clamp in Wonderland which combined virtually all of CLAMP’s major works, such as X, Rayearth, CLAMP Campus Detectives, RG Veda, Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, Tokyo Babylon, Gakuen Tokkei Duklyon, Shin Shunkaden, and even non-CLAMP works like Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures. In 1997, the same year that the X movie was released, a short Wish music video was produced and accompanied the ladies of X on their Japanese convention/promotional tour. The Clover anime music video was produced and released theatrically as a bonus feature with the first Card Captor Sakura movie in 1999.
The Double X OAV was released on VHS and LD but is now out of print. Clamp in Wonderland was released on VHS, and Wish was released in a limited edition VHS boxed set. Both of these are now out of print. Unfortunately, since the Clover music video was never released on home video on any format, it’s relatively unknown and virtually impossible to acquire.
