Ask John: Is There More Galaxy Fraulin Yuna?
|Question:
I just recently saw the 2 Galaxy Fraulin Yuna tapes and the Dark Sisters movie and I was wondering if there was a TV series of it. The characters in it made frequent references to past experiences, and it had a much larger cast of characters than something short like that would regularly have. Are there any other episodes of it?
Answer:
The two Galaxy Fraulein Yuna OAV series (2 volumes in the first series, 3 volumes in the second series) were made with fans of the series in mind. Both series are self-contained additions to the overall Ginga Ojousama Densetsu Yuna continuity established by the many interactive movie adventure game releases that preceeded the animation. The Galaxy Frauline Yuna release history is:
Galaxy Fraulien Yuna [PC Engine] (October 23, 1992)
Galaxy Fraulien Yuna 2 [PC Engine] (June 30, 1995)
Galaxy Fraulien Yuna OAV series (1995)
Galaxy Fraulien Yuna FX ~Kanashimi no Siren~ [PC-FX] (March 8, 1996)
Galaxy Fraulien Yuna Mika Akitaka Illust Works [Sega Saturn] (December 26, 1996)
Galaxy Fraulien Yuna Mika Akitaka Illust Works 2 [Sega Saturn] (December 26, 1996)
Galaxy Fraulien Yuna Remix [Sega Saturn] (December 27, 1996)
Galaxy Fraulien Yuna: Shin’en no Fairy Second OAV series (December 1996)
Galaxy Fraulien Yuna Hybrid Collection [PC] (December 1996)
Galaxy Fraulien Yuna 3 ~Lightning Angel~ [Sega Saturn] (December 4, 1997)
Galaxy Fraulien Yuna Final Edition [Playstation] (June 25, 1998)
The multitude of characters that appear in the anime all had their introductions in the video games. Those events are what Yuna refers to in the animation. It’s not totally uncommon for OAVs to be produced that are aimed at an audience already familiar with the characters’ back stories. The two Adventures of Kotetsu OAVs are part of a longer manga story. That’s why there are so many characters in the opening animation that do not appear in the actual OAVs. Likewise, the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures OAV series makes numerous references to events that have happened before the animation story begins because the OAVs are actually the third of four segments to the manga story.
