Ask John: Is There More Steamboy Anime?

Question:
At the end of the movie “Steamboy,” during the credits it shows steamboy going on various different adventures and fighting different enemies. It looks as if the movie was the introduction to a series, but I have never seen a Steamboy series. Did it never get made? or was it just not realesed in america?

Answer:
At least so far, no further Steamboy anime has ever been produced. In late 2004 there were rumors of Steamboy creator Katsuhiro Otomo considering a sequel untitled “Steamgirl,” but that plans has either been discarded or indefinitely delayed. Since the release of Steamboy, Otomo has directed the live action film adaptation of Yuki Urushibara’s Mushishi manga, and drawn the character and concept sketches for Nissin’s Freedom Project OVA series. So there is a possibility that Otomo has been busy with other projects and may intend to eventually return to Steamboy.
