Ask John: What is the Lolita Anime Series?
|Question:
Do you know anything about the “other” Lolita Anime OVAs? Besides the regular Lolita Anime OVAs, there was another series that was produced by different company that was also called Lolita Anime.
Answer:
Since I can’t tell which of the two Lolita Anime series you’re referring to as the “other” series, I’ll do my best to discuss them both. There are two existing adult anime series both titled “Lolita Anime.” Both premiered in 1984, representing the first genuine hentai anime ever released. A production studio named Wonder Kids produced the original Lolita Anime series:
Lolita Anime 1: Yuki no Beni Kesho/Shoujo Bara Kei, released on February 21, 1984
Lolita Anime 2: Nanniki-ko no Shinde mo ii/Ikenie no Saidan, released on May 1, 1984
Lolita Anime 3: Koneko-chan no Iru Mise, released on July 21, 1984
Lolita Anime 4: Hensokyoku, released on December 20, 1984
Lolita Anime 5: Miu Series Surf Dreaming, released on February 21, 1985
Lolita Anime Soushuuhen (Highlights): Seaside Angel Miu, released on May 25, 1985
I’ve personally only watched the third episode of this series, so I’ll have to provide cursory information about the other episodes from what I can interpret from the vintage “Lolita Anime Wonder Kids Tokushuugou ~ All About Lolita Anime” book. (My collection of vintage Japanese anime art books is quite extensive.)
Despite its title, the first Lolita Anime episode was drawn with relatively realistic character design and featured a teen protagonist who looks older than many of the girls in contemporary adult anime. The episode focused on bondage and humiliation. Possibly because the anime was underground, or possibly because nothing like it had ever existed before, it, and the episodes that followed, was completely uncensored.
The second Lolita Anime episode resembled the first, again featuring somewhat realistic character designs but more consensual sex, and what may be the first incest in erotic anime.
Episode 3 took a different route. The “Where the Kittens Are” OAV reveled in characteristic 1980s playfulness and cute, stylized character designs. The short story involved a businessman who’s transported to a futuristic night club through a toilet. The night club patrons include parody versions of famous anime characters including Lum and Minky Momo. The salaryman is introduced to the cute, green haired schoolgirl Miu, whom he has sex with several times. Unlike the other four 30 minute long episodes, this episode was only 25 minutes long, including a 4 minute long music video about Miu at the beach.
Episode 4 stared a young girl who looks like she could have been the prototype for A-Ko Magami. From what I gather, the episode featured a heavy emphasis on bondage and contained possibly the first girl with girl scene and first menage a trois in erotic anime.
Episode 5 was an expansion of the music video from episode 3. In this cute episode Miu is accompanied by two other cute girl friends, a young boy and a young man at the beach.
Around the same time that the Wonder Kids series premiered, Nikkatsu Video, presumably the same studio that was famous for its history of producing live action erotic and exploitation films, produced a three episode anime adaptation of erotic manga by prolific artist Uchiyama Aki:
Lolita Anime 1: Uchiyama Aki’s Obyoki Aki-chan, released on December 15, 1984
Lolita Anime 2: Uchiyama Aki’s Milk Nomi Ningyo, released on December 15, 1984
Lolita Anime 3: Uchiyama Aki’s Omorashi Gokko, released on January 10, 1985
Obyoki Aki-chan was a bizarre, psychedelic fantasy that introduced the first “demon tentacles” to erotic anime (along with the Zeros produced OAV “The Satisfaction”). The episode also featured a well endowed robot bearing a striking resemblance to R2-D2 and a lecherous old man with two faces that both have an eerie resemblance to Kentucky Fried Chicken’s Col. Sanders.
Milk Nomi Ningyo was a sort of romantic, sexual fairy tale set in 1922.
Omorashi Gokko is the story of a small girl who’s adopted by an artist who eventually becomes her lover as the dramatic story becomes increasing strange and psychedelic. This third episode features the smallest, youngest looking girl in all of the 8 Lolita Anime OAVs. This episode is also the first to begin using the censoring that would shortly later become standard on all erotic anime released in Japan.
The Wonder Kids Lolita Anime series was released on Beta videocassette and laserdisc. As far as I can tell, the Nikkatsu series was released on at least Beta and VHS videocassette. Finding these early adult anime videos may be difficult now, but doesn’t seem to be impossible.
Thanks to “Kentai” and John C. Watson for providing additional information.
