Ask John: What Titles Have the Most Fan Fiction?
|Question:
I claim no knowledge as to whether you actively observe the generation and/or proliferation of “fanfiction” works (either in anime or manga), but, in your view, which anime property seems to have generated the largest volume of material created by fans? Just based on my own observation, I’d pick GUNDAM-W as the winner.
Answer:
I don’t follow the American/English language fan fiction community at all. I honestly have no idea how much anime fan fiction or American created doujinshi exists nor which anime or manga series are popular subjects. I do try to stay abreast of Japan’s doujinshi activity, though, and based on my admittedly limited exposure and knowledge, I’d say that some of the properties most often parodied or referenced by Japanese fan created doujinshi include Type-Moon’s Tsukihime and Fate/stay night, the Aquaplus computer games To Heart and To Heart 2, Ken Akamatsu’s Love Hina, the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime, and Naoko Takeuchi’s Sailor Moon. There are doujinshi based on virtually every imaginable anime, game, and manga, but titles including Tsukihime, Fate/stay night and its supplemental Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, Love Hina, Evangelion, and Sailor Moon have simply staggering amounts of fan created comic homages and parodies.
