Ask John: Will High School of the Dead Invade America?
|Question:
Will High School of the Dead manga be released in the US? I really like the series and would love to buy it.
Answer:
Shoujo Sato’s High School of the Dead manga series hasn’t been licensed for official English language publication yet, but it does seem like an ideal candidate for future acquisition. The manga’s provocative and stylistic artwork is striking and particularly appealing to American readers. The manga’s zombie apocalypse story may, in fact, be more familiar and immediately adopted in America than in its native Japan. And the development of an upcoming anime TV series adaptation from Madhouse will certain boost the original manga’s profile and international demand. Considering that stylistically similar manga series including Tenjho Tenge and Gantz have been fairly successful in America, I can only presume that High School of the Dead is candidate for similar reception and treatment.

This just seems like a slam dunk. The only possible objection I can see is to the fan service, an odd objection when you consider its a story containing intense violence and an epidemic that mutates the entire population into cannibals, but since when has US morals made much sense? Despite this, there’s no way this wouldn’t be well-received if it was marketed properly.
This manga is really engrossing.
I think it is a no brainer that this should be brought to the states.
