Ask John: Will There be a Third Munto OVA?
|Question:
How much Munto is there? I noticed that this is an original concept. It has no manga or novel that it is going off of, that I know of. Plus I just watched the two OAVs and at the 2nd one it leaves off with King Munto and Yumemi going to save the world together. So is there a third OAV coming or are they just leaving it at that? I would love to see more and have them save the world!
Answer:
Munto was Kyoto Animation’s first anime project, released in 2003. It was followed by Munto 2, released in 2005. The success of “KyoAni’s” anime adaptations, including Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu?, Full Metal Panic Second Raid, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, Air, Kanon, and Lucky Star have all vastly overshadowed Munto, the studio’s original concept. Unfortunately, despite the cliffhanger ending of Munto II and its promise of a third episode, no third episode has ever been announced. Since Munto is KyoAni’s first and only original production, I’d like to think that the studio may have a fondness for it and eventually revive it. However, at the present time, Kyoto Animation seems to be too busy with very successful and popular adaptations of other, established titles to have time to spare on its own original creation. I can’t blame the studio for concentrating on higher profile and more popular work. And it seems that fans prefer Kyoto Animation working on high profile adaptations rather than a third Munto OVA. I’d like to believe that we’ll someday see a third Munto OVA, but, honestly, I can’t even guess whether that will ever happen.
