Ask John: Will There Be More Black Lagoon Anime?
|Question:
Hello I from Russia me strongly interest a question on anime the Black Lagoon there will be its continuation? And what probability?
Answer:
At the present time there are no known plans in Japan for more Black Lagoon anime. Very dark, gritty and violent anime targeted at young adult viewers typically appeal to a rather small audience in Japan, which explains why these type of programs usually aren’t very long. Tehxnolyze, Ergo Proxy, Berserk, Elfen Lied, Cowboy Bebop, Black Blood Brothers, Witchblade, Gilgamesh, Innocent Venus, Tokyo Majin Gakuen, Tokko, and Speed Grapher, to name a few, all serve as examples of grim and mature anime series that total roughly 13 to 26 total episodes and show little or no sign of being continued or revived.
While anime of this variety is often popular with international viewers, the primary audience for new anime productions remains Japanese, so if Japanese viewers aren’t interested in seeing more of these shows, there’s little chance of Japanese animators and producers investing the time, effort, and money into continuing them.
However, it is relevant to note that there are dark, violent, and suspenseful anime franchises that have been successful, for example, Death Note and Hellsing. My personal instincts urge me to believe that a new Black Lagoon anime series is highly unlikely; however, since the manga series is still ongoing and the franchise is still relatively recent and popular, I can’t completely discount the possibility.
