Ask John: Will There Be More Pilot Candidates?
|Question:
Will they be continuing Candidate Pilot, or are the ten episodes in the boxed set the only episodes created?
Answer:
Megami Kouhosei (Candidate for Goddess) renamed “Pilot Candidates” for its American release, originally had 12 television episodes broadcast in Japan between January 11 and March 27th, 2000. The episodes were oddly numbered “Curriculum 0” through “Curriculum 11” instead of 1-12. The most often heard complaint about the series is that it has no ending. This same complaint has been leveled against all of the X animation and the Hunter x Hunter TV series because in all three cases, the manga these anime were based on were not finished when the animation was made, thus the animation didn’t have a pre-existing conclusion ready to animate. A 25 minute long 13th episode OAV was released to Japanese home video on May 25, 2002, presumably to wrap up the TV series’ unfinished story. While not a ratings failure during its original Japanese television broadcast, Megami Kouhosei was also not a tremendous success, which explains why it took two years after the series ended for it to get an OAV, and why no further episodes have been scheduled for production. Given that an anime adaptation of Megami Kouhosei creator Sukisaki Yukiru’s latest manga serial, D.N.Angel, has just been announced, it’s probably unlikely that Xebec or Bandai will go backward to the older Megami Kouhosei manga as the source of more animation.
