Battle Royal Announced for NTSC DVD

England’s Tartan Video has announced plans to re-release the controversial Japanese drama Battle Royale to DVD, this time in an NTSC progressive scan print with new subtitles and a new Dolby 5.1 audio track. Tartan evidently believes that Battle Royale deserves the best possible picture and sound quality, and although the majority of UK DVD consumers use the PAL video format, progressive scan technology is only possible with the NTSC video format used in America, so the new disc will be in NTSC format. There has been no word yet on whether the new DVD will be encoded for DVD Region 2 or not, nor whether the disc will be officially released outside of the UK when it becomes available on the 27th.

Tartan Video first released a widescreen, subtitled PAL Region 2 DVD version of Battle Royale in the UK on January 21st.
