Central Park Media Officially Closed
|Crain’s Communications reports that New York City based anime distributor Central Park Media (CPM) officially ceased operations and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Monday, April 27th. The 17 year old company owes $1.2 million to creditors and has not been active in publishing new home video titles in the past year, at least. CPM was founded in 1990 and distributed anime titles including Grave of the Fireflies, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Project A-ko, Urotsukidoji, and La Blue Girl. CPM also published English translated manga including Lodoss War, Slayers, and Kizuna. According to the stipulations of Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the company will permanently cease operations and its assets will be liquidated.

Wow… and so it goes.
I’m not softened to seeing an inactive title licensor leave the scene, but I am rather saddened that it’s Central Park Media… whose operators have been huge proponents of legal channels of distribution, getting up close and personal with fans, and altogether keeping anime an excitable, niche experience. It’s unfortunate to see them go; they’ve been around for so very long.
You know, just a couple of months ago, I purchased a discounted DVD of DARKSIDE BLUES for old time’s sake…
