Daily Radar Ceases Nintendo Coverage
|As a result of its parent company, Imagine Media, being sued by Nintendo for copyright infringement for using Pokemon images and the name “Pokemon” in their “Unofficial Pokemon Trainer’s Guide,” the well-known video game news site Daily Radar has decided to stop news and review coverage on Nintendo products altogether. Daily Radar editor Michael Wolf says, “Nintendo has filed this lawsuit in an effort to bully us into ceasing coverage of its products in ways in which it does not like. We refuse to be bullied both for our sake and for the sake of our readers.” Daily Radar insists that there are two sides to every story, and that their side has not yet come to light. Based on what is known, Nintendo charges that Image Media’s “100% Unlicensed” Pokemon strategy guide is pure theft of copyrighted material. Daily Radar contends that the re-printing of screen-shots and the use of Pokemon names constitutes “fair use” in a legal sense and should be allowed based on the precedent that these type of books have never been legally challenged before. In an odd compromise, Daily Radar, in their attempt to resist Nintendo’s efforts to “bully” them, have apparently conceded to Nintendo’s wishes. In accordance with Nintendo’s wishes, Daily Radar will no longer publish negative or unlicensed news about Nintendo products. At the same time, Daily Radar will no longer publish licensed or positive news on Nintendo either.
