Death Becoming Popular in Japanese Pop Culture?

The Yomiuri Newspaper has published an article detailing the increasing popularity of the “shinigami” (roughly equivalent to “grim reaper”) in contemporary Japanese fiction. Manganews has published an English language translation of the article, which includes examples and detail on the origin of the shinigami literary image.

The spirit of death will again haunt anime in the short Shinigami no Ballad anime television series scheduled to premier on Japanese television next March.
