Derivative Season Already?
|I wonder if the current season of new TV anime represents a new rotation in generational demographic or just current anime being highly redundant.
The first episode of Re-Kan seems practically like a reverse clone of Kotoura-san. Sougeki no Soma appears to be an updated version of Yakitate Japan that focuses on dinner cuisine instead of pastries. Omakase Miracle Cat Dan looks and feels an awful lot like a non-crude sibling to Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku. Denpa Kyoushi is GTO for otaku.

Did Yakitate Japan have people orgasming because of meat juice? Food Wars is the only anime I’ve watched for the season so far, and it’s…certainly something. For me, it’s not derivative, because Toriko certainly didn’t go quite this far with enjoying food. It does remind me of an even more on the nose version of Gourmet Girl Graffiti.
That’s particularly why I called it an “updated” version. Mister Ajiko, I believe, started the “food epiphany” concept. Yakitate Japan escalated it to ridiculous exaggeration. Koufuku Graffiti evolved the concept yet further by introducing a sexually suggestive impression. Sougeki no Soma has taken the sexually suggestive to more obvious heights.
I agree with you John, my first thought after reading the description for Food Wars was, OK updated Yakitate Japan! After seeing the first episode my initial perception did not change. I have never been someone to shun away anime without first giving a few episodes a try, but I have recently been skipping shows either because the idea or concept is just the same recycled storyline from recent seasons, too much fan service to the point that there really isnt a storyline or at least one that makes sense. The positive side to having very few quality shows every season is that I have time to watch older shows that i was not able to before, recently finished Karakuri Zoushi Ayatsuri Sakon.
“Plastic Memories” is “Najica Blitz Tactics” without the fan service.
Is it? I wouldn’t know, because I didn’t watch Blitz Plastic Memories is the best show so far this season.
