Detail on New Studio Ghibli Projects
|According to the December issue of Animage magazine, Studio Ghibli is currently at work on three new anime projects.
A 100 minute long theatrical adaptation of British fantasy novelist Diana Wynne Jones’ Howl’s Moving Castle (Hauru to Ugoku Shiro) will be directed by Mamoru Hosoda, best known for his direction of Toei’s Digimon movies. Production will be supervised by Hayao Miyazaki. The movie is tentatively scheduled for release next July.
“Baron,” to be directed by Hiroyuki Morita, will be set in the universe of Yoshifumi Kondou’s Ghibli film Whisper of the Heart. Fans that have seen Whisper of the Heart will recall that the cat doll featured in the film was named Baron. Baron will be Mr. Morita’s first time directing; he has previously been an animator for titles including Kiki’s Delivery Service and Ah! Megami-sama. Baron will also be released as a manga illustrated by Aoi Hiirage, the artist behind the Whisper of the Heart manga adaptation.
Finally, “Ghibli Episode 2” is now in the works, a sequel to the short anime fictionalization of the real Ghibli Studio, broadcast on April 8, 2000 during a television documentary about Studio Ghibli.
