DiscoTek Acquires Hols & Sherlock Hound
DiscoTek has announced its acquisition of domestic home video rights to Isao Takahata’s directiorial debut, the 1968 fantasy film Taiyo no Ouji: Hols no Daibouken (Hols, Prince of the Sun). DiscoTek will release the film this December.
DiscoTek has also license rescued Geneon’s 2002 domestic DVD release of director Hayao Miyazaki’s 1984 television series Meitantei Holmes. The complete 26-episode series will be re-released in a single bilingual collection on September 30.
Will be nice to have both of these titles on official American DVD. The original domestic DVD release of “Sherlock Hound” is one of the most rare and valuable of all American anime DVD releases.

Every time Discotek makes new acquisitions or license rescues a title I get excited, more so than their competition. I’m always crossing my fingers that they will license rescue Maison Ikkoku and Kimagure Orange Road.

Keep Disco Evil: Viz has said it would consider Maison Ikkoku if Ranma sold well enough.
I’m fascinated by the way the American fan community almost entirely ignored classic and vintage anime during roughly 2000-2008, but now that a lot of America’s fan community has matured a bit, there’s now much more appreciation for and interest in vintage & classic anime.
John: Streaming’s really helped to renew the viability of older shows here. Even if a series isn’t likely to be picked up for home video [Gundam ZZ, anyone?], it still helps create fan interest in the overall brand. Plus, moe and shonen anime with filler porn is as terrible and shallow as our YA adaptations, and casual viewers want things with substance again. Oh, and the lack of fake fangirls over-inflating the value of the anime market means they can sell these older properties with more realistic expectations on returns.
