Disney Licenses Spirited Away
|Screen Daily has confirmed that Disney has officially secured the translation and distribution rights to Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi for North America, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and France. Apparently in an attempt to avoid the fiasco that surrounded the American theatrical release of Princess Mononoke, “Disney is moving quickly to get Spirited Away released, possibly as early as July.”
The film is still drawing record numbers of viewers in Japan, an amazing 7 months after its initial release. The film is now approaching 30 billion yen gross ($226m) and 23 million admissions. “Shortly after the film won the Golden Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival, Japanese distributor Toho announced that it would give Spirited Away an ‘encore’ release on 130 screens, starting March 9.”
