Entertainment Weekly Best of 2000

Entertainment Weekly has come out with its “Best of 2000” issue. Ang Lee, director of Crouching, Tiger Hidden Dragon placed number 10 on the “Entertainers” list. Zhang Ziyi, also of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ranked highest on the list of “Breakout” stars. The movie itself was the number three film of the year. The DVD version of Princess Mononoke placed number six in “Best Video” list. “Hayao Miyazaki’s most ambitious work is to anime what Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is to the martial arts genre, a barouge, self-conscious masterpiece. The insanely complicated plot triangulates somewhere between Joseph Cambell, The Lord of the Rings, and Japanese myth, and the images carry a majestic shock, as if you’re peering over a mountain into a new world.” Powerpuff Girls placed number 10 on the “Best Video” list with a comment comparing it to Dragon Ball Z for girls. Digimon got a humorous mention as the “Worst Pokemon/Net Crossbreeding Attempt.”
