Escaflowne a Problem on PS2

Anime News Network has been able to independently confirm that some Playstation 2 units will not play the upcoming Escaflowne DVD volumes 5 & 6.

The DVDs do not play at all on PS2 devices with DVD driver version 1.10, giving an “UNABLE TO READ DISC” error message, even with the “diagnosis” feature enabled on the machine. Other PS2 models may also display similar problems.

According to Bandai representative Jerry Chu, this is a problem with the PS2, not the DVDs themselves. This information sounds very plausible as many people have been complaining that the PS2 is a much less robust DVD player than it was originally thought to be.

It may be worth noting that these two discs are the first manufactured by Bandai’s new DVD replicator, Future Media. Previous DVDs in the series replicated by Cinram did not exhibit any serious playback problems on the PS2.
