Evangelion 1.0 TV Broadcast Draws 12.7% Rating
Yahoo Entertainment News reports that the July 3rd Japanese television broadcast of the Evangelion 1.0 motion picture, which included an exclusive revised ending, earned a 12.7% viewer rating. Reportedly, that rating is significantly lower than the number of viewers that tuned in for other, earlier anime movies broadcast on TV. For (unconfirmed) reference:

Princess Mononoke (first TV broadcast) 35.1%
Howl’s Moving Castle (first TV broadcast) 32.9%
Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind (ninth TV broadcast) 23.3%
My Neighbor Totoro (ninth TV broadcast) 23.0%
Castle in the Sky, Laputa (ninth TV broadcast) 22.2%
Ged Senki 16.4%
Miyori no Mori 15.8%
Brave Story 13.9%

Starcade, your persistence in the insane idea that watching select anime online alone is damning not just anime fandom but the universe as we know it is impressive. There are no shades of gray with you, are there? Just black and white.
Eva’s low ratings couldn’t possibly be because it’s not exactly as family friendly as a Miyazaki blockbuster, right?
Torrents and the like can only be used as a scapegoat for so much. You may want to expand your repertoire if you want to be taken seriously.

I’m guessing it did poorly because Japan is tired of triple-dipping. And if 2.0 don’t deliver any better, I imagine an icy reception for the threequel.
The second new movie is doing boffo box office right now, so it’s not a case of the popularity of Evangelion declining in Japan. Reportedly all TV ratings are on the decline in Japan, and this was at least the second time Evangelion 1.0 has been broadcast on Japanese TV. After all, a 12.7% viewer rating is actually very good compared to most anime broadcast on Japanese TV. Late night anime are lucky to get a 2% audience share.
Heh, BRAVE STORY… that was fun, but still rather weak movie.
The new one’s making money, but will it still have the same endurance as the rest of the series? Eva’s become the FF7 of the company, where it’s no longer about innovating, but cashing in as much as possible.
