Forrest J. Ackerman Dead at 92
|Forrest J. Ackerman, who launched the first movie monster magazine in 1958, Famous Monsters of Filmland, amassed one of the greatest collections of horror movie memorabilia of all time, and influenced a generation of fans and movie directors, died of heart failure at the age of 92 at his home in Los Angeles late Thursday night. Ackerman also created the Vampirella character for Warren Publishing and coined the phrase “sci-fi†in the 1950s, inspired by the newly popular compacted-hyphenate “hi-fi.†He will be greatly missed.

Ackerman was an invaluable science fiction archivist whose experience and insight into the world of filmmaking is memorable on several levels. Ackerman and two other old cats from his generation, Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury, were (and still are) each very close friends from back in the day. If I recall correctly, one of the key moments in his decision to pursue sci-fi was when he and his two buddies went and saw KING KONG (1933) when it was first released.
