FUNimation Reveals New Licenses & Rescues
|FUNimation has formally announced its acquisition of domestic distribution rights to the D-Frag!, BlazBlue Alter Memory, Akuma no Riddle, Freezing Vibration, and Unbreakable Machine-Doll television series and Strike Witches and Steins;Gate movies. FUNimation has also acquired new domestic distribution rights to the two-season Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya television series, Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya & Nyoron Churuya-san web anime series, and the Lucky Star TV series and OVA, and Cowboy Bebop television series that were all previously distributed on domestic home video by Bandai Entertainment.
Cowboy Bebop will be re-released on domestic DVD and will be released on domestic Blu-ray for the first time in December. The series will be released on regular edition DVD and regular edition Blu-ray, and also in a FUNimation.com exclusive DVD/BD combo and an alternate Amazon.com exclusive DVD/BD combo with different packaging and premiums.

That last item is by far the best news. Cowboy Bebop is an excellent anime that needed to be rescued.
I agree; however, from a collector’s perspective, I’m a bit anxious about the possibilities inherent in different collector’s editions being released as multiple retailer exclusives.
Hopefully, that only means the physical extras will be different, and not anything on the actual BD media.
Choosing between 2 different premium editions offered by 2 different distributors doesn’t sound good at all. That’s heading into video game company logic territory.
OK so Amazon revealed the details of what’s included in their premium edition. They are:
1. Limited Edition clamshell art box
2. 140 page black and white art book featuring early concept sketches and designs that highlight Cowboy Bebop’s origins.
3. 48 page vibrant, full-color art book
I am surprised they licensed Unbreakable Machine-Doll for home video. Not in a way since I actually enjoyed it while it simulcasted. Other than that think that was the only title interested in.
