FUNimation Sales & Profits Increasing
|Funimation parent company Navarre has reported that Funimation sales were up during this year’s second quarter although total sales for Navarre’s publishing division, which includes Funimation, Encore, and BCI were down 26% compared to Q2 2008. More than half of the decline is attributed to the shutdown of the BCI subsidiary. Navarre earned a $2.3 million profit during Q2 2009, compared to a $44.5 million loss during the same period last year.

Two other things struck me as key in the press release:
1) Funimation now has effective right-of-first-refusal across the board on new anime from Japan
2) Funimation’s US market share is now somewhere in the 56-60% range.
(I said 60-65% when they got the Sojitz and Geneon releases 18 months or so ago, and almost got laughed off the Internet…)
Gen Fukunaga and Funimation now effectively own the US anime industry going forward.
All I can say about Funi “effectively own[ing]” the US anime industry is good for them. I was skeptical about them years ago when they were the DBZ company, but the last couple of years have shown they know what the fans want and will keep the industry afloat. I have nothing but respect for Funi at this point, save for the Crayon Shin Chan releases.
