Godzilla Becomes Art
|CNN reports that Taro Okamoto Museum of Art in the Tokyo suburb of Kawasaki has recently opened an exhibit entitled “Since Godzilla,” devoted to paying homage to the king of monsters as fine art. Museum curator Hiroshi Ohsugi says of the exhibit, “Godzilla… [is] a cultural phenomenon, not just a pop icon of lowbrow thrills.” “Godzilla, like all true art, is a ‘kind of mirror’ on society,” filled with political messages and social concerns that reflect 50 years of Japanese cultural history.
