English translated? The Japan Times is an English-language paper, and doesn’t have the Japanese edition unlike Mainichi or Asahi.
Japan greatest director has to be Makoto Shinkai. All his anime films are both beautiful and thought provoking.
Maybe the greatest anime director (still debatable) but if they’re arguing he’s greater than Akira Kurosawa then I have to disagree.
Perhaps, at one/some point in time, over the past twenty five years; but you cannot be the greatest forever… unless you’re Tezuka (?).
