Masaaki Yuasa Seeks Crowd Funding for Original Anime Short
Eclectic auteur director Masaaki Yuasa (Mind Game, Kaiba) and Producion I.G have launched a Kickstarter campaign seeking to raise $150,000 by October 31 to fund the production of Yuasa’s original ten-minute anime short film Kick-Heart.
Kick-Heart is a love story between Romeo, a successful pro-wrestler, and Juliet, a nun who lives a secret double-life as a female pro-wrestler. Romeo’s secret is that he enjoys taking a beating in the ring, while Juliet feels invigorated when facing her opponents as a wrestler. When the two meet in the ring, the fireworks fly. Their story is set in the colorful backdrop of the professional wrestling world. Will Juliet reveal her true identity to the one she loves? Will Romeo be able to share his secret to the world?

I threw down $60.
Yuasa is a pretty odd choice for “testing the waters” of crowd-funded, exportable anime. He draws in more of an alternative comics crowd than a Ghost in the Shell / Akira / Cowboy Bebop etc. audience.
If this fails to meet its $150K goal, I hope the industry / I.G. doesn’t take this to mean that crowd-funding is a dead end.
