More Blood Anime Announced
|The The May issue of Monthly Shonen Ace magazine that goes on sale in Japan this weekend will formally announce the production of a new installment in the Blood: The Last Vampire anime franchise. CLAMP will provide the story and original character designs for “Blood-C,” which Production I.G will animate. The new story will also get a manga adaptation by Ranmaru Kotone (Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo -Tokikake- manga) this May. Co-creators Mamoru Oshii and Kenji Kamiyama created the Blood: The Last Vampire franchise which launched with a 2000 anime film and has since expanded to an anime television series, novels, manga, video games, and a live-action feature film.
I like CLAMP, and I like Production I.G. But that promotional image does not fill me with anticipation or confidence.

It’s hard to judge from a couple character design images… it shows nothing of the world of the show for one. All we can say is well, she’s got glasses, a miniskirt, and shoujo-genre design from CLAMP.
This announcement makes me think of other recent Production I.G. works — xxxHolic, Kimi ni Todoke, Tokyo Marble Chocolate and Eden of the East — in how they target or at least include the “shoujo/josei” demographic through genre or character design. A lot of I.G.’s recent works stand in contrast to their older high-end stuff, which felt more niche (more nerd-guy oriented), whereas their recent stuff is relatively mainstream and broad-appeal.
This sounds like such a terrible idea… Surely, we won’t know until the visuals come in some months from now, but why would you want CLAMP of all entities to get their hands on such a property? I’m guessing “CLAMP still sells” then?
EDEN OF THE EAST did use a manga artist for the character concept art, but Kenji Kamiyama was still the central, creative voice for the entire production. Perhaps I.G is looking at something similar.
