New Berserk Movie Trailer
|This is what we’ve been waiting ten years for? A new theatrical trailer for next year’s Berserk Golden Age Arc I: Egg of the Supreme Ruler motion picture has hit the web. The first film of a planned trilogy based on Kentaro Miura’s dark fantasy manga will open theatrically on February 4.
The CG is so terrible that it frequently looks like mediocre amateur rendering. The 2D animation looks nice and sometimes moves very fluidly, but Guts’ head turn at 1:06 is terrible, and the one at 1:15 isn’t much better. At least scenes like Guts’ sword swing at 1:32 to 1:34 is very fluid, as is the hand motion at 1:38. I still vividly get the impression that a lot of this footage is left-over test footage that 4°C produced several years ago and decided to use instead of re-animating.

It feels like I’m watching Berserk as produced by the Millennium Dragon team…
yo man at least susumu hirasawa does the music again and the cg doesn’t look too bad i think it’s gonna be rad as f-word.
Apparently both Shiro Sagisu (Evangelion) and Susumu Hirasawa is on the music… I’m down. The 3D animation isn’t particularly inspiring, but it sure beats the old TV series. It might be the only way they can depict the epic battles and ornate designs the manga calls for within budget, especially since they’re going to make three of these.
seanny: Um, the old series was great. Hell, even the PS2 game looks like a better anime than this thing.
Except for key moments & episodes, I remember much of the routine battle animation in Berserk (TV) being stiffer & more recycled than the average episode of Bleach. There was also a character a friend & I made fun of (“The King who Never Moves”) whose character design was so ornate, he only appeared to change poses off-screen / between camera cuts.
At least with cel-shaded (ugh) 3D animation, you’ll actually see the characters move around on a coherent and vivid battlefield, rather than seeing the same janky animation of Guts taking a swing, and a cut to some isolated generic soldier falling off his horse with a blood splatter for the 8th time. I’m sure the animation in the movie will be OK. Probably not great, but at least suitable.
The thing I’m actually worried about is the pacing of the story. What I enjoyed most about the TV show was the downtime between battles, with wistful dialogue and Hirasawa’s music. There may not be time for that if they’re going to compact the TV show into just one movie. The movie will probably be an unrelenting rush from one major plot point to the next to the extent that Berserk will become a meaningless mishmash of arbitrary fantasy epic tropes.
seanny: You’re comparing two different companies, two different eras of animation, and two different target audiences. Berserk TV did certain things for a reason, which was to emphasize build-up and mood, not just to be flashy. And the tv show’s supposed to be three movies. They do not want to continue past volume 13 of the manga, whatsoever. Hence why fans are so pissed, ‘cus they’re just getting a PS3 remake, rather than a continuation of the original show.
“they do not want to continue past volume 13 of the manga, whatsoever.”
Incorrect. They’ve actually stated multiple times that the intention of this project as a whole is to faithfully adapt the ENTIRE manga of Berserk.
And also, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but really, what the heck is all the complaining about? Its a bunch of nitpicking. If you want to get technical, the animation in the original series was nothing special, and the show was still very good. The trailers honestly look really good and the creators seem very well-intentioned with the goals and direction and with satisfying the fans.
