New Toriyama Manga

The latest manga by Akira (Dragon Ball, Doctor Slump) Toriyama, entitled Sand Land has premiered in this week’s Shounen Jump (2000 #23). The story takes place in Earth’s future, were humans have reduced the planet to a desert inhabited by evil “mamono” [demons]. All of the world’s water supply is controlled by someone known as The King. The main character is a mamono named Beelzebub, a demon with a soft heart; he thinks it wouldn’t be fun if all the humans die. The story starts out with Beelzebub living in a compound with other demons, stealing water from passing humans until a human named Rao shows up at the compound to ask the Mamono to help find a hidden lake. Beelzebub, Rao, and an old demon named Sheef, used for comic relief, go out in search of the lake. The series reportedly has the action and humor one would expect from the author of Dragon Ball. In exchange for his help Beelzebub is given Earth’s last remaining video game console, “Play Station 6 with Dragon Quest 13” [an in-joke Akira Toriyama fans will understand.]
