NY Post Talks Theatrical Anime In US

The New York Post has published a short new article predicting anime as possibly the “next big thing” in America. The article claims that, “A new generation of blockbuster anime imports has captured the imagination of American studios, prompting speculation that what has worked so well in Tokyo might finally metamorphose into Hollywood gold. Despite financial flops like “Princess Mononoke,” optimism for anime is sky high. Two new films, “Metropolis” and “Spirited Away,” are already sparking great expectations.”

Seemingly confirming common rumor, the article claims that Disney and DreamWorks are both now negotiating with Studio Ghibli for the American distribution rights to Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi. The film cost $19.2 million to produce and has earned $205 million in Japan. Apparently, “Some industry insiders have speculated that the film could do another $250 million in the States.”

The article also mentions the January 25th release of Metropolis, and quotes James Cameron describing the movie: “It has beauty, power, mystery and, above all, heart.”
